Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment

During 2011, North Dakota's trucking industry provided 26,410 jobs or one out of 13 in the state. North Dakota's total trucking industry wages paid in 2011 exceeded $1 billion, with an average annual trucking industry salary of $39,173. In May 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States reported that truck drivers, heavy and light tractor-trailer and delivery drivers, held 12,400 jobs with a base annual salary of $36,780.

Small Business Emphasis

During 2012, North Dakota had over 2,520 small and locally owned trucking companies served by a wide range of both large and small supporting businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products

Over 46% of North Dakota communities move their goods through trucks. In 2010, trucks transported 67% of the state's total manufactured tonnage in the state or 52,819 tons per day.

Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry

During 2009, North Dakota's trucking industry paid approximately $163 million in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 48% of all taxes owed by North Dakota motorists, despite trucks representing only 15% of the state's vehicle miles traveled.

Individual Companies

In January 2013, a typical tractor-semitrailer combination with five-axle paid $4,698 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes. These taxes were over and above the standard taxes paid by North Dakota's businesses.

Roadway Use

In 2008, North Dakota had 86,842 miles of public roads over which all motorists traveled 8 billion miles, and the truckers traveled for 1.2 billion miles.

HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax that paid annually to the IRS for operating heavy vehicles on public highways at registered gross weights equal to 55,000 pounds or more.
